“Luz que contiene a las tinieblas”: la función del arte en La luz difícil desde la perspectiva del taoísmo y el budismo zen

"Light that contains darkness": the role of art in Difficult Light from the perspective of Taoism and Zen Buddhism

Författare

  • Santiago Cepeda Rebollo

Summary, in English

This work studies the role of art in the novel Difficult Light, by the Colombian writer Tomás González, by applying traditional aesthetic concepts from Taoism and Zen Buddhism. To this end, correspondences between Taoist and Zen Buddhist thinking and the author's ideological stance are identified. Also, the interaction of Difficult Light with other texts that make up González's narrative universe is traced, and conceptual bases of Taoism and Zen which are pertinent to carry out the analysis are presented and examined. Finally, the vision of beauty that determines the artistic endeavor of David (the narrator and main character of The Difficult Light) is characterized, and a parallel is drawn between the achievement of the artistic ideal and the experience of enlightenment in Zen Buddhism.
