Revenge is a theme which has fascinated people for thousands of years and which is present in a wide range of genres. Revenge also plays a central role in the nineteenth-century novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. This essay examines the various effects of revenge in this novel by focusing primarily on the vengeful characters Abel Magwitch, Miss Havisham, and Dolge Orlick. I will discuss the negative impacts of the actions of these three characters, but I will also attempt to show that, for some of them, there is also a measure of compensation and
kindness involved, and, as a result, some of the characters’ deeds can be said to have positive outcomes as well.
