The present thesis focuses on the relationship between Breton nationalism and literature. The analysis is based on the questions how a historical narrative and a collective identity are created in three Breton literary works. The works analysed are the Barzaz Breiz, Le pain des rêves and Le cheval d’orgeuil. The method used in the analysis is a historical and literary narrative analysis, analysing relevant excerpts with a connection to either (cultural) nationalism, the construction of a collective identity or the view on the Breton society. The drawn conclusion is that the created historical narratives differ greatly between the books, with the Barzaz Breiz being focused on historical victories, while Le pain des rêves and Le cheval d’orgeuil recreate an everyday narrative in a historical setting, aiming for recognition and nostalgia. All three of the works are related to the development of self-consciousness and strengthening the will to preserve and spread the Breton language and culture. Nationalism, though more cultural than political, is visible in the use of Breton words, descriptions of Breton culture and tradition and how the love for the own community, even after a traumatic past, inspires pride in the Breton identity.
