In the language of Japanese there is no equivalent of the word ”swearword” and thus the Japanese have no perception of what a swearword is, unless they have learnt it from other languages. While there are people claiming that swearwords do not exist in Japanese there are expressions and words that are similar to those of swearwords in other languages, even though they are quite few. This creates problems when sentences including swearwords are to be translated into Japanese with all the information and style from the original meaning communicated. This thesis shows the foul language in Japanese in relationship to the concept of swearwords, which does not exist in Japan, in an attempt to shed some light on how these translation problems can be solved. In doing so, research on swearwords will be presented and later applied onto the foul language in Japanese. An analysis of how swearwords in the feature movie South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut are translated will also be presented to show how swearwords can be translated into Japanese.
